So, you've decided to turn your cabin shell into the cozy retreat of your dreams! Before diving headfirst into the interior finishing, here are 10 crucial things you need to know to ensure a successful transformation:
-
Don't Close Without A/C Or Proper Ventilation: Keeping it properly ventilated or install A/C as soon as possible is essential to prevent humidity buildup before the building is done, which can lead to mold, mildew, and rot. Make this a priority to maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment.
- Insulation Is Key: Ensure your cabin shell is properly insulated to regulate temperature and energy efficiency. Without insulation, extreme temperatures can make your space uncomfortable and increase energy costs. Cheap insulation can become expensive in the long run if your building is insulated the right way. We offer spray foam insulation on building built at the shop if that is something that you would be interested in.
- Consider Electrical Wiring: Plan the layout of your electrical wiring beforehand to accommodate lighting, outlets, and appliances. It's essential to have a safe and functional electrical system in place that is also up to code. This also is an option on buildings that we build in our shop.
- Choose the Right Flooring: Select flooring materials that are durable, easy to clean, and suitable for your lifestyle. Consider factors like moisture resistance, comfort, and aesthetics when making your choice. As standard we use 3/4 plywood for your subfloor but you can upgrade to tongue and groove engineered subfloor if you want.
- Mind the Ceiling Height: Pay attention to the height of your cabin's ceiling, especially if you're considering installing ceiling fans or pendant lights. Ensure there's enough clearance for these fixtures.
- Address Wall Paneling Needs: Depending on the type of interior paneling you choose, you may need to add additional lumber to provide support and a solid surface for nailing. We do add more lumber than most companies in the framing to help you with that, but expect to still need to add some extra backstop lumber.
- Weatherproofing: You might need/want to add windows or vents...in that case you will need to ensure they are properly sealed to prevent drafts, water infiltration, and pests from entering your cabin. From factory the building is leak proof but if you have to alter anything the warranty won't cover that specific part.
- Pear and beam foundation: The downside of a portable buildings usually come in the form of foundation. It is normal for the building to settle or shift specially in the first months. Also depending on the soil, the changes in weather contracts and expands the dirt under your cabin which may shift the building. To prevent this as much as possible make sure your foundation is strong. Concrete beams, packed gravel pads, and staying away from unsettled dirt will help a lot.
- Plan for Plumbing: If you're adding plumbing fixtures like sinks or toilets, factor in the necessary plumbing lines and connections. Proper planning will ensure seamless integration into your cabin's layout. Make sure the building is blocked high enough to give the plumber the space needed to work under the your cabin.
- Personalize Your Space: Finally, don't forget to infuse your personality into the design! Whether it's through decor, furniture, or artwork, make your cabin shell a reflection of your unique style and preferences. This is the main advantage you have when you finish your own Eagle Ridge cabin shell.
By considering these 10 factors before diving into your cabin shell interior project, you'll be better prepared to create a space that's not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable for years to come. Happy designing! 🏡✨
